Resetting a MiFi

MiFi is a small portable router that creates a local Wi-Fi network for any internet-enabled device (cellphone, computer, etc.). MiFi devices are only provided to certain roles that travel a lot, e.g. DoPs. Fellows and regular staff are NOT eligible for MiFi devices. For information on how we support our staff and fellows with stipends based on their role and responsibilities, see the Telecommunications Policy here.

This guide contains steps on how to reset a MiFi during troubleshooting.

When to Reset Your MiFi Device

Resetting your MiFi device can be considered as a troubleshooting step when you encounter any of the following situations:

  • Your MiFi device is not connecting to the internet.
  • The connection speed is significantly slower than usual.
  • Your MiFi device frequently disconnects from the network.
  • You have changed the device settings and experience issues afterwards.

Steps

  1. Get a mechanical pencil or a paper clip, or anything that has a similar sharp head.
  2. With the MiFi on, take the back plate off. Start by prying up from the open hole near the charger port.  It will snap off in sections as you pull away, which can sound scarier than it actually is.

  1. The reset button is in one of the four corners, next to a screw. The word “reset” is engraved next to the cavity that holds the reset button.
    • Soft reset: Push the button once with the sharp head of your pencil or paper clip.
    • Hard reset: Push and hold the reset button down for 15 seconds.
    • You will feel the button depress as you push it, so if you feel like you didn’t push it, you probably didn’t.

  1. If you are doing a soft reset, which is basically like resetting your home Wi-Fi, wait times vary between less than a minute to 3 minutes. If you are doing a hard reset, also known as a factory reset, it may take a little longer, but shouldn't be longer than 30 minutes.
  2. Put the back plate back on.

If resetting your MiFi device does not solve your current issues, or if you encounter any obstacles during the reset, please reach out to IT at helpdesk@saga.org with your device's details.
