Enabling Google 2-Step Verification
2-Step Verification (2SV), also known as two-factor authentication, adds an extra layer of security to your Google account. We will be completing this process using an authenticator app, which requires a smart device. If you do not have a smart device, please reach out to the IT at helpdesk@saga.org.
Authenticator App
- To turn on 2-Step Verification, go to the Security page of your Google account by clicking here or by navigating there manually (Icon > Manage your Google account > Security). Make sure you are signed into your Saga account.

- Scroll down to the section "How you sign into Google" and click on "2-Step Verification". You may be asked to sign into your Saga Google account again. If prompted, log in using your password and it will take you to the 2-Step Verification page.

- Scroll down and you should see a few options as your second steps for login. Click on "Authenticator".

- On your smart device, download the Google Authenticator app from the Google Play Store or the iOS App Store, depending on the type of device you have. If you wish to use an authenticator app that is NOT from Google (e.g. Duo Mobile), skip step 5-6.

- After the app is installed on your device, open it and click "Get started".

- Sign in with your Saga account. If your Saga account is not selected already, click on the down arrow on the right (see image below) and select the correct account. If you do not see your Saga account on the list, you can either:
- Click "Use Authenticator without an account", or;
- Click "Add another account" then use password to sign into your Saga account.

- On the Authenticator page you opened in Step 3, click "Set up authenticator". A QR code should pop up.

- On your authenticator app, Click on the "+" sign at the bottom right, then select "scan a QR code".

Note: If you are using an authenticator app that is NOT from Google, your app screen may look different, but the setup steps should be similar, so you can still follow this guide.
- After scanning the QR code, a 6-digit verification code should pop up on your app. Enter that code where it is prompted and click "Verify". Note that on the right of the code, there is a little clock that is counting down. When the time is up, the code will be refreshed. Please make sure you enter the code promptly, or you will have to enter a new code if it gets refreshed.

- After the code is verified, you should be able to see that an authenticator is added to your account.

You have just turned on 2SV. This means that when your account is used on a new device, you may have to open the Google Authenticator app and enter the verification code generated when prompted. This helps to secure your account.
Google Prompt
When you sign into you Saga account on a new device (e.g. your smartphone), that device will be set up for Google Prompt, which is another way to perform 2SV. You do NOT need to set this up manually - when you sign in on the new device, Google automatically sets it up. That means when you sign in on your computer, Google may push a notification on your smartphone that prompts for your verification. The following steps will show you how the verification process looks like.
- You will see a notification pushed to your phone, asking you to confirm if it is you trying to sign in. Click on the notification to open it up.

- On the pop-up screen, check the device type, time, and location to make sure that it matches with yours. If everything looks good, click "Yes, it's me" to confirm your identity and log in.
- If you did NOT initiate a new login request, or the information is NOT relevant to you, please click "No, don't allow" and notify IT via helpdesk@saga.org.

Optional: To add another layer of security, you can also set up backup codes. In case you can’t sign into your account with normal 2SV steps, you can use a backup code for the second step.
