ChromeOS: Backing up Local Files to Google Drive

This guide will walk you through the steps to back up your Chromebook’s local files to your Google Drive.

Step 1: Make a folder in your Google Drive folder to store the backup data.

  • Expand Google Drive, then select My Drive, then click the 3-dotted menu in the top-right corner and select New Folder. This will create a Backup Folder we will refer to later.

Step 2: Create a .zip folder of your local data.

  • On the left side, select My Files, then click the 3-dotted menu in the top-right corner and click Select All.

  • Click on the same 3 dotted menu and select Zip Selection. This will create a .zip file, usually named Archive.zip

Step 3: Move your .zip file backup to Google Drive.

  • Select the newly created .zip file and copy it. (Ctrl + C)
  • Go back to the Backup Folder you made in Step 1 and paste the .zip file there.

NOTE: To access your archived items, simply double-click or “Unzip” the .zip file and your contents will be displayed.
